Whakaahua Kaumatua – The Kaumatua project

Poihakena Portraits are launching a new project in 2016. We will be creating a collection of Portraits that whanau will be able to treasure in years to come

Lyn HikuWith the recent passing of many loved ones we realised too often the beauty of our loved ones were only captured only in blurry photographs. We had no treasures like those of our great grandparents to show the mokopuna. The tradition of having beautiful portraits taken seems to have declined in recent years and we would like to bring that back starting with our Kaumatua.

We will be setting up Kaumatua Portrait Sittings at Marae around the motu on our trips back to Aotearoa. We will also be having open days at our studio where our Kaumatua will be invited to attend a complimentary sitting. All Kaumatua will receive an 8×12 Portrait free of charge.

If you are interested in hosting one of these days please email us at poihakenaportraits@gmail.com.

We will try to make special arrangements for those who are in nursing homes or bedridden. Please contact us if you know someone who needs a home visit. We only have limited availability but will try to make arrangements.

Portraits will be taken in front of a backdrop with lighting.  Please bring any taonga you are known for wearing, korowai or kakahu you love and a smile.

Please complete the form below to register you’re interest in attending.
